The 2026 Guangzhou Medical Expo grandly opened as scheduled at the Canton Fair Complex. As an influential industry summit for biomedicine in South China, the expo gathered innovative biomedical enterprises, research institutes, medical institutions and industrial authorities nationwide to showcase cutting-edge technologies, new products and research achievements in life sciences, building a vital platform for achievement exhibition, resource matching and industrial exchange for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area biomedical sector. Taking advantage of this grand industry event, the exchange event themed Business Environment Support & Innovation Empowerment – Guangzhou Development District Biomedicine Industry Development Exchange was held concurrently in Area B of the China Import and Export Fair Complex on August 21.

Rooted in the solid industrial foundation of biomedicine in Guangzhou Development District (Huangpu District), the event brought together government authorities, industrial platforms, medical institutions, industry associations and enterprise representatives for in-depth discussions on core topics including policy empowerment, technical services, research commercialization, industrial global expansion and medical-research collaboration, creating a high-level dialogue platform for innovative growth of Huangpu’s biomedical industry.

At the event, Wen Riyu, Deputy Director of the Investment Promotion Bureau of Guangzhou Development District, delivered an investment promotion presentation on the district’s biomedical industry. He offered a comprehensive overview of Huangpu’s biomedical industrial layout, special support policies, key industrial carriers and full-chain supporting resources. Based on local industrial strengths, he interpreted investment incentive policies, highlighted Huangpu’s appeal to biomedical enterprises and innovative projects, and sincerely invited industry players to establish operations in Huangpu to seize development opportunities together.

During thematic sharing sessions, representatives from government departments and industrial stakeholders took the stage one after another to share practical experience in industrial development. Lin Shengwen, Director of the New Drug Application Service Center under the Administration for Market Regulation of Guangzhou Development District, presented a speech titled Building a New Model of Technical Services for Biomedical Review and Approval. Focusing on bottlenecks in the R&D and registration of innovative drugs and medical devices, he introduced Huangpu’s pioneering practices in supporting review and approval procedures and technical service systems. By providing proactive professional guidance for local biomedical firms throughout R&D and registration, the district accelerates the market launch of innovative products.

Qiu Fanghua, Second-level Researcher of the Huangpu District Health Bureau of Guangzhou City, delivered a keynote report entitled From Classic Prescriptions to Premium Products, From Medical Equipment to Integrated Services – Huangpu District Systematically Streamlines the Whole TCM Commercialization Chain. From a healthcare administration perspective, he outlined Huangpu’s practical pathways to advance the inheritance, innovation and industrial translation of traditional Chinese medicine research outcomes. Covering excavation of classical herbal formulas, upgrading of TCM medical equipment and deployment of clinical service scenarios, the district has streamlined the full clinical-research-industrialization chain, converting TCM resource advantages into industrial momentum and fostering a distinctive TCM-biomedical industrial cluster in Huangpu.

Gao Zhaosheng, Director of the Guangzhou Municipal Center for Health Technology Assessment and Talent Evaluation, Executive Vice President and Secretary-General of the Guangzhou Medical Association, shared insights under the theme Dual Drivers for Medical Research Innovation: Coordinated Development of Guangzhou Municipal Medical Research Funds and Medical Science and Technology Awards. He elaborated on incentive mechanisms for medical research grants and cultivation systems for medical science awards, explored actionable models to incubate clinical research achievements, and bridged the gap between clinical trials and industrial applications.

You Xiaodie, Deputy Director of the Guangzhou International Bio Island Development Promotion Center, gave a presentation Guangzhou International Bio Island – Core Engine Leading Guangzhou’s Biomedical Industry. She systematically introduced the island’s industrial carriers, complete industrial ecosystem and supporting services, and explained how the park pools innovative factors to fuel the growth of biomedical enterprises.

Xu Guoping, Deputy Director of the Sino-Singapore Knowledge City Cooperation Affairs Office, focused on the International Health Park of Sino-Singapore Knowledge City, sharing progress in building the Greater Bay Area International Medical Health and Industrial Innovation Center, as well as the park’s plans and practices for cross-border medical cooperation and life science industrial agglomeration.

Kang Wei, initiator of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Biomedical Innovation Federation, delivered a speech A Golden Harbour for Innovative Drugs and Devices Going Global. He analyzed opportunities and challenges facing domestic innovative pharmaceutical and medical device enterprises in overseas expansion, and shared feasible pathways supported by the Greater Bay Area to help domestic products tap international markets.

A signing ceremony and project introduction session were also arranged on site. Zheng Xiaofei, President of Overseas Chinese Hospital, and Zhu Shaohua, Vice President of Gaobo Medical Group, jointly took the stage to introduce the strategic cooperation between Overseas Chinese Hospital and Gaobo Medical Group. The partnership deepens linkages between medical institutions and industrial platforms and elevates medical-industrial integration to a new stage.

Leveraging the industrial agglomeration effect of the Guangzhou Medical Expo, this event facilitated effective matchmaking between government departments, industrial platforms, medical institutions and market entities. The Huangpu District Health Bureau will continue to leverage its administrative strengths to deepen medical-industrial integration and connect clinical resources with industrial innovation. On one hand, it will advance the commercialization of distinctive medical achievements including traditional Chinese medicine; on the other hand, it will coordinate multi-party stakeholders to improve medical service and research translation support systems, optimize the business environment for the biomedical industry, empower the expansion and upgrading of the biomedical sector in Guangzhou Development District, and support high-quality development of the life science industry across the Greater Bay Area.
