To fully prepare for the 2026 Guangzhou Medical and Healthcare Industry Expo and forge in-depth connections with top-tier scientific research resources in the Greater Bay Area, Deng Xijin, Director of the Pharmaceutical Policy Division of Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, and Lin Wei, Deputy General Manager of Guangdong Yinling Health Industry Co., Ltd., led a delegation from July 8 to 10 to visit four core institutions: Guangzhou National Laboratory, Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Biomedical Sub-center of the National University Regional Technology Transfer and Commercialization Center (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area), and the School of Future Biomedicine, Sun Yat-sen University. Comprehensive exchanges were held on topics including innovative achievement exhibitions, academic conferences and project roadshows, injecting robust innovation momentum into the Expo to be held at Hall B, Guangzhou Import and Export Fair Complex from August 21 to 23.

Government-Research Collaboration to Advance Industry-Research Coordination

Zhang Yan, Vice Dean of the School of Future Biomedicine, Sun Yat-sen University, attended the exchange meeting.

Vice Dean Zhang Yan stated that the University will leverage its comprehensive strengths in scientific research, clinical practice and education. Drawing on policy, industrial, capital and media resources aggregated by the Expo, the University will smooth the full chain of scientific and technological innovation from laboratory research to industrial application, fueling high-quality development of Guangzhou’s medical and healthcare industry.Sun Yat-sen University plans an integrated university-hospital exhibition model, pooling biomedical disciplines at the main campus and its ten directly affiliated hospitals to build an exclusive Sun Yat-sen University Pavilion. A wide range of fully open events will be arranged, including policy briefings, segmented sector presentations, special launches, innovation achievement contest showcases and investment and financing matchmaking meetings. The pavilion will display mature medical products, R&D-stage innovative projects, cutting-edge academic findings, industrial cooperation demands and benchmark technology transfer cases, fully demonstrating the integrated research strength and commercialization ecosystem of the university and its affiliated hospitals.

As a core hub for medical education and biomedical research in southern China, Sun Yat-sen University ranks among the nation’s top-tier medical institutions, boasting a complete full-chain innovation system covering basic research, clinical diagnosis and treatment, and technology commercialization.

Attendees from Guangzhou National Laboratory included Wang Huisheng, Assistant Director and Director of the General Office; Liang Ping, Director of the Technology Transfer Department; Ruan Bibo, Supervisor of the Technology Transfer Department; Ding Yan, Supervisor of Funding and Compliance at the Concept Verification Center; and Yang Chen, General Administration Supervisor of the Concept Verification Center. Wu Xinyi, Administrative Manager, and Huo Cancan, Assistant Director, represented the Biomedical Sub-center of the National University Regional Technology Transfer and Commercialization Center (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area).

For this Expo, Guangzhou National Laboratory will feature displays of cutting-edge medical technologies and industry-academia-research transformation. It will also host a parallel event—the Excellent Project Promotion and Roadshow of the Lab’s Medical Innovation Camp—to showcase high-quality incubated projects, deepen industry-research matching and accelerate the industrialization of innovative achievements.

A national strategic scientific and technological force in biomedicine within the Greater Bay Area, Guangzhou National Laboratory focuses on frontier life science research and core technological breakthroughs in biomedicine.The Biomedical Sub-center of the National University Regional Technology Transfer and Commercialization Center (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area) serves as a core scientific and technological hub integrating the national innovation-driven development strategy with the development of the Greater Bay Area. It acts as a critical bridge linking scientific research resources from universities nationwide with the Greater Bay Area industrial ecosystem. The sub-center aggregates biomedical research outcomes from more than 200 universities across the country and connects with industrial clusters, clinical institutions and capital players in the Greater Bay Area. Leveraging the industry-academia-research-medicine exchange platform built by the Guangzhou Medical Expo, the sub-center will further streamline matching between research outcomes and industrial demands, address the "last-mile" bottleneck of university technology transfer, drive more original innovative projects to land in the Greater Bay Area, and continuously supply original innovation momentum for the high-quality upgrading of Guangzhou’s medical and healthcare industry.

Sun Fei, Vice President of Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIBH), Chen Chaonan, Director of the Technology Transfer Division, and Dong Congcong, Business Supervisor of the Technology Transfer Division, attended the exchange meeting.

Vice President Sun Fei introduced that GIBH’s exhibition will center on two themes: Innovative Biotherapeutic Technologies and National Large-Scale Facility for Human Cell Lineage Research. Adopting a scenario-based presentation model combining dynamic video demonstrations and physical equipment exhibits, GIBH will showcase cutting-edge biotherapeutic technologies and outcomes from the major science infrastructure. He emphasized that GIBH will capitalize on its technological strengths to connect more frontier research results with clinical scenarios, industrial partners and capital support, speeding up the translation of innovations from laboratories to industrial end-users.

Affiliated directly with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, GIBH is a national biomedical research institution operating multiple national-level key R&D platforms, making it a vital force driving life science innovation in the Greater Bay Area.

Build Consensus to Support High-Quality Expo Delivery

During this series of visits, all four institutions fully recognized the value of the 2026 Guangzhou Medical Expo and confirmed deep participation with frontier research outcomes:

1. Showcase the latest breakthroughs in innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices, cell and gene therapy, AI-enabled medical care and other fields;

2. Build matchmaking platforms via special forums, technology roadshows and project signing ceremonies to connect government, industry, academia, research institutes, medical institutions and investment capital across the full innovation chain;

3. Accelerate industrial upgrading by using the Expo as a catalyst for rapid commercialization of research achievements, supporting Guangzhou’s development as a national innovation hub for the Greater Bay Area’s biomedical industry.
